Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
I got big smiles from my steppers yesterday when I told them we weren't go to do any fancy choreography. What they didn't know was that I had planned drills, high intensity drills with periods of rest in between. We worked, reaching that uncomfortable place where we think we're done...but actually pull through, and end up very proud of ourselves at the end.
HiiT or High Intensity Interval training is hands down one of the best ways to burn fat without causing your body to burn muscle tissue. This is because HiiT utilizes a lot of fast twitch muscle fibers and this helps to build muscle during your cardio workout, not lose it. I thought Step class was a great opportunity to introduce it.
The relationship of the work and recovery interval is important to improve the different energy systems of the body. For example, in Step class we followed a 1:1 ratio. A 2-3 minute high intensity drill followed by a 2-3 minute recovery.
My goal is to encourage as many people as possible to try a HiiT class. Even if it's completing a few drills. We need not to be afraid of getting uncomfortable. We are stronger than we think!
